YouTube to guitar tab

Paste a link to a guitar video and ScoreStarling fetches its sound and writes it out on a staff with TAB underneath: hear it beside the video, set the player’s tuning and capo, move notes to the strings they use, and print it.

Drop a guitar video or recording here

Links from 19 video and music sites, and public file, Drive and Dropbox links. The first five minutes are written out, with TAB under the staff. Private, members-only and DRM-protected media can’t be fetched.

What goes in and what comes out

You bring

  • A link to one guitar video or song on YouTube, TikTok, Bilibili, Instagram, SoundCloud and other sites
  • Or a public file, Drive or Dropbox link
  • Or the video file itself

You get

  • The notes on a staff with TAB under it, or TAB alone
  • Playback beside the video’s sound, to check it by ear
  • The player’s tuning and capo, once you set them
  • A PDF and the TAB as text, free; MusicXML with the TAB staff once the score is unlocked

How it works

  1. Paste the link above. The workspace opens with it and with Staff and TAB chosen, after sign-in if needed, and checks what the link holds: its title, length and a quick listen.
  2. Say what is playing: one instrument for a guitar on its own, a band for a whole song. A band shows its price before it starts.
  3. Our server fetches the sound and writes the score with TAB under the staff. Play it beside the original and fix what you hear.
  4. In Score settings, under Guitar TAB, set the tuning and capo the player uses, and how strings are chosen.
  5. Download the PDF, or TAB as text under More formats.

Match the player’s tuning and capo

ScoreStarling hears the sound, not the hands, so the TAB of a guitar on its own starts in standard tuning without a capo. If the player tunes down or uses a capo, set the same in Score settings and the frets line up with the video. The notes and the playback stay as they are; only the strings and frets change.

Standard tuning

44022042

Half step down

0013Tuning: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb3103
The first two bars of Ode to Joy from a guitar tuned half a step down and played with the usual shapes, so they sound a half step lower. In standard tuning the TAB starts on the B string and no fret matches the video; set to Half step down, it shows the shapes the player used.
  • Tunings: standard, Drop D, half and whole step down, Drop C, DADGAD, open G, D and E, and 7-string guitar; 4-, 5- and 6-string bass; ukulele and baritone ukulele. An AI assistant connected to ScoreStarling can set any other tuning you name.
  • A capo goes up to the 12th fret, and the frets count from it as on a capo chart: with a capo at the 2nd fret, fret 0 is the string played at the capo.
  • Not sure of the tuning? Look for red notes. In standard tuning a note below the low E has no string, which often means the guitar is tuned down.
  • Then check the strings against the player’s hands: select a note to move it to the string they use, or choose Fewest hand shifts for a solo that climbs the neck.

Which videos make good TAB

  • A guitar on its own and clearly heard: a lesson, a cover or a fingerstyle piece. Choose one instrument; it’s free.
  • A whole song: choose a band, and every instrument gets its own staff, with TAB for the guitar and bass. It uses credits, at a price you see before it starts.
  • Clean tone. Heavy distortion and effects blur the notes.
  • The part you want near the start: the first five minutes are written out. To start later in a video, download it, trim it and drop the file in.

Good to know

  • The TAB shows where each note can be played, not how the player fingers it. Check the strings against the video and move any that differ.
  • Bends, slides, hammer-ons, palm muting and strumming patterns are not written, and strummed chords come out as their notes, without chord diagrams. One tuning and capo hold for the whole piece.
  • Private, members-only and DRM-protected media, and anything behind a subscription, can’t be fetched. Sites sometimes block downloads for a while; dropping the file in always works.
  • You can also paste a link in a chat with ChatGPT or Claude and ask for the TAB, once ScoreStarling is connected; see the connection guide.

Questions and answers

Is YouTube to guitar tab free?

Yes for a guitar on its own, a voice or solo piano, up to three a day: the score, its TAB, the PDF and the TAB as text are free, and a free score’s PDF carries a small footer line. A band, with guitar and bass each on their own staff, uses 40 credits a minute after you agree to the price. MusicXML with the TAB staff needs the score unlocked: 15 credits, once. See pricing.

Does it copy the fingering from the video?

No. Only the sound is fetched, so ScoreStarling hears the notes, not the hands. Each note goes to its lowest fret by default, or Fewest hand shifts keeps the hand in one position; select any note to move it to the string the player uses.

The player uses a capo or another tuning. What do I do?

Set the same in Score settings, under Guitar TAB: half or whole step down, Drop D, Drop C, DADGAD, open G, D or E, and a capo up to the 12th fret. The notes and the playback stay as they are, and the frets move to match the player’s. A guitar on its own starts in standard tuning without a capo: ScoreStarling doesn’t work out either from the video.

Which links work?

A link to one video or song on YouTube, TikTok, Bilibili, Instagram, SoundCloud and others, 19 video and music sites in all, plus public HTTPS links to a file and Google Drive or Dropbox share links. A playlist or channel page, a private or members-only video and music a service encrypts can’t be fetched: download the video yourself and drop the file in.

Can I get only the guitar from a band song?

Choose a band: every instrument gets its own staff, and the guitar and bass show TAB. You can then download the guitar part on its own as a PDF. A band uses 40 credits a minute, shown before it starts.
