Add ScoreStarling to ChatGPT as a custom MCP server. Do it once, at chatgpt.com in a computer’s browser: the ChatGPT apps can’t add one. You need Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu.

Custom MCP server · chatgpt.com

Connect ChatGPT in five steps

  • A computer’s browser, not the phone or desktop app
  • Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu
  • About two minutes, no API key
  1. Open Plugins and choose “Add custom MCP server”

Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, select +, then Add custom MCP server.

Not in the menu? OpenAI is still moving accounts to this setup. Open Settings → Security and login, switch on Developer mode, then come back to Plugins.

The + sits beside the Plugins heading
  2. Fill in the server

Name it ScoreStarling and paste the server address as the Server URL. Under authentication choose OAuth, and leave client ID and secret empty: ChatGPT registers itself.

    Name
    ScoreStarling
    Server URL
    https://mcp.scorestarling.com/mcp
    Authentication
    OAuth
    What to enter
  3. Accept the warning and create it

ChatGPT warns that a custom server is not reviewed by OpenAI. Select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin.

The usual notice for any server not yet in OpenAI’s directory
  4. Sign in to ScoreStarling and allow access

ScoreStarling’s sign-in opens in a new tab. Sign in with Google or email, or create your account there, then select Allow. If no tab opens, find ScoreStarling under your plugins and select Connect.

ScoreStarling’s own page: ChatGPT never sees your password
  5. Use it in a new chat

Start a new chat, type @ and pick ScoreStarling. Once it’s added, you can also pick it from the plugin list under + in the message box.

    Attach a recording and ask

Then make your first score. Attach a recording and say “Turn this into sheet music.” On the phone app, or when the file doesn’t reach ScoreStarling, say “Open ScoreStarling” and choose the file in its panel.

Don’t see + or Add custom MCP server? Check that you’re in a browser rather than an app, and on an eligible plan. In Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces an admin has to allow custom MCP servers first. ScoreStarling was submitted to ChatGPT’s directory on October 6, 2026 and is waiting for review, so searching there finds nothing yet.

The plugin recommended

  1. Open Customize → Plugins → Add → Add marketplace

In claude.ai or the desktop app, open Customize → Plugins, select Add, then Add marketplace.

Customize holds your connectors, skills and plugins
  2. Add ScoreStarling’s repository, then the plugin

Enter the repository below and add it. ScoreStarling appears among your plugins; open it and select Add.

    Repository
    HaiyiMei/scorestarling-plugins

Prefer a file? Download the plugin’s .zip from its latest release and use Add → Upload plugin instead. An uploaded file doesn’t update itself.

A public GitHub repository; no GitHub account needed
  3. Connect the ScoreStarling connector

Adding a plugin doesn’t sign you in. Open the plugin’s Connectors tab: ScoreStarling shows Not added. Select Add, then Connect, sign in to ScoreStarling and select Allow.

The skills work once this shows Connected
  4. Switch it on in a chat

In the message box select +, open Connectors and switch on ScoreStarling. Then attach a recording or sheet music and ask; Claude picks the matching skill by itself.

Connectors you add on the web or desktop also work in Claude’s phone apps

The connector only any plan

  1. Open the connector form

Use Connector only above, which fills in the name and address, or open Customize → Connectors, select + Add, then Add custom connector.

    Name
    ScoreStarling
    Remote MCP server URL
    https://mcp.scorestarling.com/mcp
    What to enter
  2. Choose “Register automatically”, then connect

Under the OAuth client choose Register automatically, not Claude’s published identity, and leave client ID and secret empty. Add the connector, select Connect, sign in to ScoreStarling and select Allow.

To change it later, remove the connector and add it again
  3. Switch it on in a chat

Select + in the message box, open Connectors and switch on ScoreStarling. The Free plan allows one custom connector.

The same switch as for the plugin

On Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds the connector first, under Organization settings → Connectors → Add → Custom → Web, and decides whether members may add plugins; members then select Connect. You can’t add a connector in Claude’s phone apps, but one added on the web or desktop works there. To transcribe a recording you attach in Claude, also let Claude send it. ScoreStarling was submitted to Claude’s directory on October 6, 2026 and is waiting for review.

Questions

Before you connect and after

Questions about ScoreStarling itself are in the FAQ. Accounts, storage and deletion are covered in the privacy policy.

What is ScoreStarling MCP?

A hosted Model Context Protocol server at https://mcp.scorestarling.com/mcp. It transcribes recordings, reads sheet music and score files, creates a score from ABC/MusicXML text, edits and previews changes, and exports notation or playback. Browser WebMCP tools are a separate interface. New to MCP? Read what a connected assistant can do with a recording.

Which assistants work with it?

Any MCP client that connects to remote servers over HTTP with OAuth sign-in. The tabs above cover Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code; Other covers Gemini CLI, Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf), Hermes and similar clients.

Do I need an account or an API key?

You need a ScoreStarling account, but no API key. When you connect, your assistant opens ScoreStarling’s sign-in in the browser: sign in with Google or email, or create your account there, then allow access. Your assistant’s plan limits and your ScoreStarling account’s limits still apply.

Why can’t I add it in the ChatGPT app?

OpenAI lets you add a custom MCP server only on chatgpt.com in a browser, and only on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. Open chatgpt.com on a computer, follow the ChatGPT steps once, then ask in any new chat. Until ScoreStarling is listed in ChatGPT’s directory, this is the only way to add it.

Can I install the plugin file myself?

Yes. In Claude, on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, add the plugin from its GitHub repository, or upload its .zip from the latest release. In ChatGPT on the web, upload the same .zip with Upload plugin archive, beside Add custom MCP server, where your account or workspace allows uploading plugins. The plugin brings two workflow skills that help the assistant check and fix a transcription. Without it, add the server address; ScoreStarling sends its essential guidance to every connected assistant, with or without the skills.

Why can’t Claude upload my recording?

Claude sends an attached recording from its code sandbox, which can’t reach scorestarling.com until you allow it. In Settings → Capabilities, turn on Code execution and file creation and Allow network egress, then add scorestarling.com under Additional allowed domains; on Team and Enterprise plans an owner does this under Organization settings → Capabilities. Start a new chat that is not incognito. If Claude still won’t take your audio file, ask for a new transcription and choose the file in the ScoreStarling panel, or upload it in the workspace. Uploading audio from a chat is still being tested.

Does it compose or generate music?

ScoreStarling’s audio engines transcribe existing recordings. It can also turn ABC or MusicXML that you or an assistant write into a score; any composition comes from you or the assistant, rather than an audio-generation engine. Audio exports play the score back with General MIDI sounds; they are not separated from your recording.

How many transcriptions can I make?

A voice, one instrument or solo piano is free, up to three a day. A band uses 40 credits a minute, up to five minutes a piece; your assistant tells you the price in credits and asks before spending any. Unlocking a score’s MusicXML, MIDI and ABC costs 15 credits, once, and your assistant asks first too. A free account can have one score in progress at a time, and Plus five. Plans and credit packs are on the pricing page.

Will a score appear inside my assistant?

Tools and the interactive score panel are separate capabilities, and the panel depends on what each client can display. It has opened in ChatGPT and Claude in our tests; other clients may show text only. When a client can’t show it, open the same score in the browser workspace.

Sign-in worked but access was denied

Check which account you signed in with, then disconnect ScoreStarling in your assistant and connect again. If it still fails, contact support.

The client says registration failed

Choose automatic (dynamic) client registration and leave any client ID or secret fields empty: in Claude that is Register automatically, in ChatGPT plain OAuth. ScoreStarling does not support published client identities (CIMD) yet, so Claude’s Use Claude’s published identity will not connect. Claude can’t change this on an existing connector, so remove it and add it again.

Which routes have been tested?

ChatGPT and Claude have signed in and run tools in real conversations. The ChatGPT, Claude and Claude Code steps were checked on October 7, 2026, the others on October 2; labels may differ in your version. WebMCP has been tried with a desktop browser agent on a local copy of the workspace, not yet on scorestarling.com.
