What goes in and what comes out

You bring

  • A voice memo from your phone (.m4a, .mp3, .wav and others)
  • Or a recording made on this page
  • A melody sung, hummed, whistled or played on one instrument

You get

  • The melody on one staff, with its tempo and key
  • Playback beside your memo, to check it by ear
  • A PDF in staff notation, guitar TAB or jianpu, free
  • MusicXML and MIDI once the score is unlocked

How it works

  1. Choose the memo above, or press Record. The workspace opens with it; if you need to sign in first, it waits in this browser.
  2. Keep “One instrument or voice” and type the tempo if you know it.
  3. Play the score beside your memo, loop a bar at a time and fix pitches and lengths.
  4. Transpose it if you like, then download the PDF or unlock MusicXML and MIDI.

Record a memo that writes out well

  • Sing or play the melody on its own, phone close, in a quiet room.
  • Keep a steady tempo; a click in headphones helps, and then you know the BPM to type in.
  • Trim silence before the first note.

The full walkthrough, with what to expect from each step, is in How to turn a voice memo into sheet music.

Good to know

  • Sliding notes, vibrato and a drifting tempo show up as written notes to clean up.
  • A memo of piano chords is better as “solo piano”, which writes both hands; several instruments together are “a band”, which uses credits.
  • Lyrics are not written out from singing.

Questions and answers

Can I record straight from this page?

Yes. Press Record, allow the microphone, play or sing, then press Stop and use it. The recording goes to the workspace with you, where you still choose the options before anything is written out. Up to five minutes.

Is it free?

Yes for one instrument or voice, up to three recordings a day, with free PDF, MP3 and WAV downloads. MusicXML and MIDI need the score unlocked for 15 credits, once; every account gets free credits each month.

Will it get my rhythm right?

It writes what it hears against the tempo it detects, so a steady pulse helps most. Type the beats per minute if you know them. A voice is written in 4/4 to start; you can change the meter and fix note lengths in the workspace.

Can I change the key for my instrument?

Yes. Transpose the whole score in the workspace, or ask in ChatGPT or Claude once ScoreStarling is connected, then download the PDF in the new key.
