What goes in and what comes out
You bring
- A PDF or picture of printed staff notation
- A MusicXML, MIDI or ABC file
- Or a recording: a voice, one instrument or solo piano is free
You get
- Jianpu, 1 = the key or 1 = C, or the melody alone
- A jianpu PDF to print, free
- The staff score beside it, to edit
- MusicXML and MIDI once the score is unlocked
How it works
- Choose your file above. The workspace opens with it and with jianpu chosen for the new score, after sign-in if needed.
- For a recording, say what is playing; sheet music and score files need no choice and use no credits.
- The score opens in jianpu. Press Jianpu again to choose 1 = the key, 1 = C or the melody.
- Download the PDF. It follows the view you see.
See the same score both ways
Beethoven’s theme as ScoreStarling writes it: the staff PDF and the jianpu PDF made from the same score, with 1 = C, the key of the piece.
Ode to Joy, played back
What carries over into jianpu
- Lyrics, repeats and endings, dynamics, grace notes, and changes of key and meter.
- Triplets, and groups of five and seven, written under an arc with their number.
- Several voices of one part, combined; lyrics and structure follow the leading part.
- A rhythm jianpu can’t write is refused with the part and bar named, so you can fix it on the staff.
Good to know
- Jianpu is a view: you edit on the staff, and the jianpu shows the latest saved version.
- Jianpu pages are not read automatically; an assistant that reads images can write one out for you to check.
- Phone photos and handwriting read poorly; a clean PDF from notation software reads best.
- Playback plays repeats once.
Questions and answers
Is the jianpu PDF free?
Yes. Reading sheet music and score files is free, and so is the PDF, in staff notation or jianpu. A free score’s pages carry a small footer line until the score is unlocked.
Which jianpu can I choose?
1 = the song’s key (movable do), 1 = C (fixed do, with black keys marked), or the melody alone. The PDF you download follows the view on screen, and the choice stays with the score.
Can I edit in jianpu?
You edit on the staff; the jianpu view shows the latest saved version and follows each save. Switching back and forth keeps your selection and edits.
Can it read a jianpu page and turn it into staff notation?
Not automatically: the sheet music reader reads staff notation only. An AI assistant that can see images, such as ChatGPT or Claude with ScoreStarling connected, can try to write a jianpu page out; check its reading against the page.
